Miguel Angel’s Story: Steady Job is Source of Pride for Former Felon with a Disability

By Lupe Espinoza, Westside Center for Independent Living, Los Angeles, CA

Miguel Angel*, 35-years-old, was referred to the Latino Employment Connection (LEC) program in April 2005. He struggles with substance abuse, experiences depression and has a criminal record.

Miguel Angel’s work history is spotty because he has never held a steady job. Instead he worked for temporary agencies with sporadic assignments that only lasted several days each. Miguel Angel has had a difficult time looking for jobs because general background checks reveal his criminal record. This was the most significant barrier to employment for Miguel Angel.

He was concerned that he could never be employed by a reputable company. Miguel Angel would go several nights without sleep due to his depression. This contributed to his inability to secure and keep a steady job. Due to the pressure of his unstable employment and erratic income, Miguel Angel’s wife left him and took their children to live with her mother. Miguel Angel felt ashamed that he could not provide for them.

Despite the multiple barriers Miguel Angel faced, the LEC job developer helped him find a job…and they did it in just three days. Miguel Angel was offered a position as a fire extinguisher technician at a well-known company. The company offered to train him since he did not have experience in fire protection, and he rose to the occasion. Miguel Angel’s starting pay was $9.00 an hour. After three months, he was offered medical benefits and renegotiated his salary.

With the support and guidance of the LEC Job Developer, Miguel Angel has retained his employment and is planning to reunite with his wife and children.
