The World Institute on Disability (WID) is seeking a Project Manager/Trainer for its National Technical Assistance Center for Latinos with Disabilities, Proyecto Visión. WID is a nonprofit public policy center dedicated to promoting independence and full societal inclusion of people with disabilities. Currently, WID operates with a staff of 15 employees and regular volunteers and is located in downtown Oakland, California.
Since its founding in 1983, WID has earned a reputation for high-quality research and public education on a wide range of issues.
The Board of Directors and staff, over half of whom are people with disabilities, are respected national leaders in the disability rights field as well as in industry, government, and social services. This enables WID to bring a cross-disability perspective to the policy arena.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
Proyecto Visión is the first national technical assistance center established to increase employment opportunities for Latinos with disabilities. The project features bilingual technical assistance via a toll-free technical assistance hotline; website, electronic newsletter and listserv; annual employment-based national conference and regional trainings; leadership development activities; outreach with the Spanish-language media; and broad dissemination activities.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS:
-Report to Project Director
-Coordinate national conference and regional trainings
-Coordinate annual advisory board meeting; quarterly calls
-Manage the project budget including subcontractors
-Monitor project timelines
-Coordinate project evaluations and other communication with funding sources
-Process invoices
-Maintain monthly records and compose reports to funders
-Communicating and problem solving with representatives of partner organizations
-Set deadlines and work with subcontractors to develop bimonthly bilingual electronic newsletter in Spanish and English
-Update project website content on a monthly basis
-Work with associate editor and webmaster to maintain quality of the webzine and up-to-date presentation
-Research and compose articles on relevant topics for webzine
-Locate and summarize appropriate news and resources for website
-Monitor listserv content and introduce topics as appropriate
-Respond to requests for proposals and participate in project development activities including grant writing
-Reading, interpreting and drafting written documents (reports, charts, spreadsheets, budgets, correspondence, etc.) as required to accommodate Project Director’s visual impairment
-Other administrative assistance to accommodate the Project Director’s visual disability
TRAINER FUNCTIONS:
Develop and conduct trainings for groups including employers social service providers on topic such as:
-general disability awareness (language, etiquette and interacting with people with disabilities)
-history of the disability rights movement
-definition of Independent Living philosophy and overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
-intersection of disability and culture
-recruiting, retaining and promoting people with disabilities from diverse backgrounds
Travel in the United States to deliver trainings
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-Documented project management experience and/or education
-Experience conducting trainings, workshops, or other public speaking
-Superior written and oral communication skills in both English and Spanish
-Knowledge of bicultural issues
-Demonstrated knowledge of both Latino and disability communities
-Ability to work under deadline pressure
-Ability to manage competing priorities
-Ability to work independently
PREFERENCES:
BA/BS and equivalent experience working in the disability and the Latino communities
Personal experience and/or knowledge of Independent Living and experience with disability
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Project Director
COMPENSATION: $42,500 - $47,500 (DOE) annual base range at 100% FTE, plus benefits
