Latino Students Find New Pathways to Success

Last year, twenty-two-year-old Yessica Cruz had no idea that one year later she would be completing her General Education Development (GED) and working toward a possible career goal using her newly learned computer skills. A year ago, Edgar Sierra’s poor language proficiency led to unsatisfactory school performance which escalated into feelings of discouragement and low self-esteem, prompting him to drop out of high school. DREAM-ing for Equality

The Development, Relief, and Education of Alien Minors Act, better known as the DREAM Act, is a proposed law intended to provide legal residency to undocumented young people who were brought to the United States as children. If passed, the DREAM Act would only give legal residency to young people who arrived in the U.S. before age 16, have lived continuously in the U.S. for at least five years prior to the law’s enactment, and have graduated from high school or received a GED. At age 18, Sarah Funes of San Mateo, California is already an advocate and consultant in the areas of disability history, resources, and empowerment. She is a member of Youth Organizing! Disabled and Proud—a program organized by the California Foundation for Independent Living Centers that aims to foster a sense of shared cultural pride among youth with disabilities. Read more...

Internships and a Helping Hand

I first heard of the ARRA Internship Program at UC Berkeley when I went to see my Disabled Students Program (DSP) counselor. I had originally gone to ask her for information about graduate school and for more detailed information about the GRE, but somehow the conversation turned to internships and she asked if I was participating in the ARRA program. Confused, I told her I had no idea what she was talking about. That was when she gave me some papers and explained that the ARRA was a program especially designed to help students with disabilities find internships that they are both able to do and interested in doing. One important step is to prepare yourself well for job interviews.
