How College Students with Disabilities Can Look for Work at Top Employers

It is important not to just focus on how an employer is good for people with disabilities, but also on how people with disabilities can actually get jobs at that employer. In order to learn about some of the basic strategies young people with disabilities can use to get their foot in the door at top employers of people with disabilities, PV spoke with Susan Lang, President and CEO of Lime, an organization that helps students with disabilities make connections with major employers, such as Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, PepsiCo, Target, Goldman Sachs, and Google. Futuros, Inc.: 25 Years Employing People with Disabilities in Puerto Rico

Futuros, Inc. is a Puerto Rican nonprofit organization founded in 1984 with the mission to promote and provide employment opportunities to qualified individuals with disabilities. To that effect, Futuros closely collaborates with various employment initiatives on a diverse spectrum of fields to place qualified disabled people in suitable work environments in the public and private sectors. Futuros is specifically geared to integrate persons with disabilities into the workforce by providing to employers a referral network of disabled persons who are qualified to work. Read more...

Estela Landeros: Ability Trumps Disability

Estela Landeros says that the biggest problem when disabled individuals look for work is that we tend to think about our “disability” before we think about our “abilities.” Estela is a teacher and is a specialist in assistive technology. Through her work at IBM and the Organization of American States (OAS) over the course of several decades, she has successfully helped many people with all sorts of disabilities integrate themselves in businesses where they got well-paid jobs. Over the years, Estela herself has been challenged by different health problems that have left their mark on her physical abilities, causing her to become a member of our community, the disability world.
