Resources for Latino Veterans with Disabilities
Because of the risks involved in their work, military veterans represent a disproportionately large part of the disability community. While census data shows that only about 19% of the population as a whole has a disability, 26%, or more than 6 million, of all veterans are disabled. As such a large part of the disability community, disabled veterans have been central to the disability rights and Independent Living movements, and many of the U.S. government’s early efforts and laws to support disabled Americans were in response to the needs of veterans. As a result, there are many services for disabled veterans, though it can be challenging for disabled veterans to understand which services and benefits they are eligible for. Read more...
Combat on Many Fronts

Combat on Many Fronts is a 38-minute video that clearly defines Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), lists many of its symptoms, talks about services that are available, and shows concrete examples of people who have gone through the process of dealing with PTSD. Furthermore, it makes a real effort to reach out to the Latino veteran community, not just for dealing with PTSD, but for any issue, to let people know that there are services that can help them. Interview with Veterans Ombudsman, Lt. Col. Jorge L. Mas-Marrero
Lt. Col. Jorge L. Mas-Marrero, USA (Ret.), was appointed Veterans Ombudsman of Puerto Rico in 2009 by the newly elected governor of Puerto Rico, Luis G. Fortuño. Mas-Marrero was an active service member from 1980 to 2006; he was deployed to Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina from 1996 to 1998 and served all over the world before concluding his military career as Professor of Military Science for the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). He is also the president of the Puerto Rico chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA). We spoke on Monday, May 11, 2009, at his office in San Juan. Read more...
