Transportation
Paratransit is a transportation service mandated by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) for people with disabilities. In Monterey County this program is known as Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) RIDES. It provides curb-to-curb service to eligible passengers as a ride-share program. MST RIDES purchased "smart buses" that feature an automatic system that announces major transfer points in both English and Spanish, automated vehicle location, and on-board video surveillance to enhance safety for drivers and riders. Services are available Monday-Saturday from 5:00 am to 12:30 am and Sunday and holidays from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm. Contact the MST RIDES office at (831) 754-2804 or (831) 373-1393 for information.
Citizenship
The Citizenship Project located in Salinas, California, began in 1995 in response to the passage of Proposition 187, and the welfare and immigrant laws in California that did not benefit immigrants. Teamsters Union Local 890 decided to serve and defend the rights of the whole community by helping its members become U.S. citizens and active participants in their community. This Project assists with form completion and an array of services regarding immigration issues and advocating on behalf of the immigrant community. Housing
Community Housing Improvement Systems and Planning Association, Inc., (CHISPA) is a non-profit community-based housing development organization. It is the largest private non-profit housing developer in Monterey County. CHISPA's projects receive funding from different sources including federal, state, and local agencies and private lenders. These financial sources make it possible for CHISPA to provide affordable units that meet the needs of very low, low and moderate income households. Most of CHISPA's rental, home ownership, and cooperative projects are designed to serve large families. They contain primarily three-and four-bedroom townhouse-style units. CHISPA is known for serving the lowest-income population in the County. CHISPA's office is at 295 South Main Street, Ste. 220, Salinas, CA 93901. Contact them at (831) 757-4657 to obtain information or apply for housing assistance.
