Working from Home - An Employment Option

By Nila Salgado, New York City, NY

Nowadays more people are looking into the option of working from home. Some of the advantages of working from home include having a flexible work schedule and reducing expenses including transportation, eating out and childcare. For those with mobility impairments, working from home may make work a little easier.

There are many jobs that can be done from home. Some examples are telemarketing, data entry, medical billing and retail sales. Avon, one of the largest employers of Latinas in the United States, is an example of a retail sales job one can do from home. Avon encourages upward mobility for its sales representatives. For bilingual Latinos, translating may be another option. Some hospitals that provide translation services do it via telephone with operators working from home. The hospital calls the translator and the translator provides the communication between the patient and the physician or other hospital staff.

In the Latino culture, cooking, sewing, crocheting and making souvenirs for special occasions such as weddings, quinceañeras, birthdays and baby showers is common. These are hobbies for some but others have converted them into income one can earn working from home.

For Latinos with disabilities all of the jobs listed above are options, especially if the person is receiving Social Security Income. The Social Security Administration's work incentive programs can allow a person with a disability to work and maintain their benefits.

Whether one decides to work in an office or from home, knowing one's options can broaden one's job search and make it more likely to land a desirable position.
