On August 27, 2003 the Harlem Independent Living Center (HILC) celebrated the Center's success by celebrating job seekers. The day included image enhancement consultations and group discussions about job readiness. How are these topics related? They are both about building a positive self-image.

HILC consumers - many of them Deaf - visited the office like any other ordinary day. Consultants from Mary Kay and Avon set up workstations in the front and back of the office. First the Mary Kay consultant explained her job to the consumers and then she offered free facials and makeovers.

At first no one volunteered because the attendees felt scared and embarrassed. After a little encouraging one consumer decided to take the plunge. She got a facial and make over. Suddenly all the other people in attendance wanted the consultants' attention. At the conclusion of the image consulting portion of the day the newly made over people's attitudes had changed. They all were happy, excited and appeared to be more confident. Confidence is very important in the working world. First impressions are often very important, especially in job interviews. If the job candidate does not seem self-confident, the employer may think they would not be an effective worker.

After the consumers received their makeovers, they were able to speak to an employment specialist from Abilities, Inc. The consumers got resume tips, and learned about employment options and opportunities that were appropriate for their varying levels of education and work experience.

At the end of the day the Avon consultant provided each attendee with a gift bag containing Avon products to be used at home for pampering. Taking care of oneself can greatly improve one's self-image. Although self-esteem comes from within, if a job candidate looks professional it can improve the way they perceive themselves.

Needless to say Consumer Appreciation Day was a huge success for staff and attendees.
