Freedom Scientific released a Spanish
language version of OpenBook 6.01 scanning and reading software
last December. It includes features for blind and low vision users
who need access to text and text imbedded in graphics such as PDFs.
The new software includes IBM's
ViaVoice version 6.4, a Spanish pronunciation dictionary, and optical
character recognition that uses new versions of Fine Reader, Caere
and Recognita. And with the use of the Freedom Import Printer, text
that is deeply imbedded in graphics can be extracted and recognized.
OpenBook also improved document portability as users can save files
to their notetakers or convert files into MP3 or WAV formats.
Once scanned, OpenBook 6.01 converts
the printed page into electronic information to be read aloud through
its voice synthesizer and shown on a customizable screen display
with a variety of settings for those with low vision. There are
user-defined settings for magnification, character spacing, color
and contrast as well as exclusive reading enhancement features that
are easy to use and flexible for novice and advanced users.
OpenBook contains several new features
including a correction system that stores previously corrected errors
to improve accuracy, the ability to quickly read documents with
automatic word, line, sentence, paragraph or page advances.
