New National Report on Employment Barriers for Disabled People

We all know the employment situation for people with disabilities in the U.S. is bad and this new publication analyzes why and makes suggestions for improvements.

On August 12, the National Council on Disability issued a report that explains that no reliable statistics exist about employment of disabled people throughout the country.

The report calls for better collaboration among the many government efforts to collect statistics about employment and unemployment and contributing factors.

The report also identifies some potential problems in the new "Ticket to Work" program of the Social Security Administration.

Some actions recommended to reduce the current barriers are 1) to expand current federal programs to increase employment of people with disabilities and 2) to increase accessibility of federal employment efforts, such as the One-Stop Career Centers.

The report also recommended the review and updating of current tax incentives to employers to hire people with disabilities or to make workplaces more accessible.
