Kathy Martinez of California, director of the National Technical Assistance Center for Latinos with Disabilities, was confirmed in late July to the board of the U.S. National Council on Disability. Board members are nominated by the President and must be confirmed by the Senate.

The first meeting of the newly appointed Council is taking place in Los Angeles, August 19-20. The new Chair of the Council is Lex Frieden of Texas, long established disability rights leader. Frieden is director of the Independent Living Research Utilization program in Houston, which also collaborates in the National Technical Assistance Center for Latinos with Disabilities.
